Shirley E. Brown, a Detroit native, brings with her a wealth of experience and a passion for working with youth.
With over fourteen years of experience in both public and charter schools, she believes in motivating, inspiring, and setting the example. Beyond her principal experience, Brown has also been an assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, assistant principal, dean of culture, curriculum coordinator, and a teacher. In addition, Brown has served on the Michigan Department of Education Curriculum Council and School Improvement Committee. Each of Brown’s roles have played a vital part in understanding academics as well as the operational responsibilities needed to lead a high-performing school.
Shirley holds both her B.A. in English and M.A. in Education from Wayne State University. Her training also includes IB Heads of School from Texas and RELAY National Principals Fellowship of New York. She also is a licensed trainer for Introduction to Restorative Practices and Using Circles Effectively through the International Institute for Restorative Practices (IIRP).
Currently Shirley is serving as Principal for Pershing High School and previously was the founding Principal of DEPSA Early College of Excellence. She encourages a strong college going culture supported by meeting the needs of students who suffer from the cycle of disadvantage.
